The original idea for this issue’s theme came when a colleague at the English Dept video cupboard asked, “Are there any movies in here that aren’t grim and depressing?” And I knew what she meant. We inevitably reflect the culture we teach in, but have we become desensitised to the pervasive “This program contains violence” and the ubiquitous dystopian novel? Are we obsessed with apocalypse, and is the ‘happy novel’ is an oxymoron?
