English in Aotearoa #092

$10.00

Weaving Words 17

This issue of English in Aotearoa presents highlights from the 2017 NZATE Conference , including a summary of the keynote presentations. Also included in this edition is a look back at English in Aotearoa and what to expect in future editions of the magazine.

Ngaire Hoben, Cynthia Orr, Gavin Hood and Robin Holding give us their opinion on the state of English teaching currently. No matter how things change in the classroom, reading will always be our core business. Literacies are the domain of all teachers, of course, but reading takes centre stage only in the English classroom.

Continuing the conversation in the previous edition about text selection, Dr Gillian Hubbard shares her recent research into teachers’ decisions regarding their choice of texts, and Sarah Frost gives us an entertaining glimpse into conversations about texts in her department at McAuley High School.

Most philosophically inspiring, however, is Welby Ing’s piece on assessment which leads this edition.
