Context

This film weaves current issues in society such as the Black Lives Matter movement and incidents of police brutality into a coming of age story for our young protagonist who must learn to use her voice to speak up for what is right. The film is explicitly political and draws on numerous historical incidents to tell the story of racism and discrimination through the teen narrator’s point of view. The text also highlights issues and bias within the media and how stories are told.

The film asks us to put ourselves in the shoes of the main protagonist, Starr Carter, and understand the world from her point of view. It challenges the audience to think about issues in our own society and suggests ways we could understand each other better.

It addresses such themes as:

  • Racism and police brutality
  • Duelling identities and code switching
  • The power of language/The importance of using your voice/standing up for what is right

“You got make a change. It’s time for us as a people to start making some changes, let’s change the way we eat, let’s change the way we live, and let’s change the way we treat each other. You see the old way wasn’t working so it’s on us, to do what we gotta do to survive.” – Tupac Shakur
