English in Aotearoa #076

Spoken English

A range of responses to the challenge of public speaking, so welcome and my thanks to Meredith Caisley and Donna McKinlay-Jones from Speech NZ, and to Margaret Austin from Write Limited. It is good to have their support and be reminded of the wealth of teaching and learning that happens outside our classrooms. Iain McGilchrist and Matthew Griffiths give us an overview of the issues and the approaches in two very different schools, Yvette Krone and Shawn Gough outline two interesting ways into the speaking tasks, and Nicky Allely, Jamie-Lee Coffey and Michelle Budge bring us their perspectives as new teachers. I’m grateful to all these teachers: they have faced and conquered the very challenge our students face in this context – going public in front of your peers.
