English in Aotearoa has turned 100. One hundred issues to be exact, and it’s at milestones like this that we are able to look inward and reflect on both where we have come from and where we are headed.
English teachers this year have done incredible mahi, keeping both their own heads and those of their students above water in a year in which the waves just keep coming. If the plot of 2020 showed up in one of our students’ writing, we’d tell them it wasn’t believable. We’d tell them to just focus on one main issue. We’d tell them not to use all their most surprising material in the first half – you need to build to the climax. But, 2020 is that student lost in the wonder of creation, and there’s no way we can dampen its enthusiasm for the plot twist. Let’s just be grateful the murder hornets were over and done quickly.
